Das Π¬ (Kleinbuchstabe ь; glagolitisch β° , russ. мягкий Π·Π½Π°ΠΊ, ukr. Π·Π½Π°ΠΊ ΠΌ'якшСння β€žWeichheitszeichenβ€œ; bulg. Π΅Ρ€ малък β€žkleines (J)erβ€œ ist ein Buchstabe des kyrillischen Alphabets. Im Belarussischen, Bulgarischen, Russischen und Ukrainischen signalisiert er die Palatalisierung des vorhergehenden Konsonanten. Im Altkirchenslawischen beschrieb er einen kurzen Halbvokal zwischen e und i, bevor er in den meisten slawischen Sprachen zu einem e wurde oder verschwand. Der verwandte Buchstabe Πͺ war ein Halbvokal zwischen u und o, wie in engl. bird.

FΓΌr Dobrovsky hatten die Halbvokale Πͺ und Π¬ noch keinen selbstΓ€ndigen lautlichen Wert: sie modifizierten nur die Aussprache der ihnen vorhergehenden Konsonanten. Er hielt es daher fΓΌr ΓΌberflΓΌssig, das Πͺ ans Wortende zu setzen, sondern behielt nur das Π¬, das die Weichheit der Konsonanten ausdrΓΌcken sollte.cite-ref-1[1]
